About Hire A Box

Hire A Box started in 2009 with a simple observation: almost everything about getting moving boxes was worse than it needed to be. You drove to a hardware store, guessed how many you needed, guessed wrong, paid for boxes you'd throw out a fortnight later, then spent a Sunday breaking them down for the recycling.

So we built the opposite. Boxes delivered to your door, in the quantity that actually matches your home. Keep them for up to three months. When you're done, we come and collect them — and your deposit comes straight back.

What we actually do

We hire and sell cardboard moving boxes and packing materials across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

Hiring is the option most people choose, and it's around 20% cheaper than buying. You pay a refundable deposit per box, use them for up to three months, and we pick them up free when you've unpacked. Your deposit is back in your account within five business days.

Buying makes more sense if you're moving somewhere we don't deliver, if you need the boxes longer than three months, or if you want them for ongoing storage. You can buy new, or buy quality-checked used boxes for less.

Either way, delivery is free — on hire orders over $65 and purchases over $99 — and you pick a two-hour window rather than waiting in all day.

Why our boxes aren't supermarket boxes

The boxes you'll find behind a supermarket or in a hardware aisle are usually made from recycled board of inconsistent grade. That's fine for light storage. It is not fine for a full house move, where boxes get stacked six high in a truck and carried up stairs.

Ours are made from virgin, non-recycled board at a premium grade — stiffer, more consistent, and far less likely to bow or blow out at the base when they're fully loaded. Every box is checked before it goes on the van. If a hired box comes back damaged, it doesn't go out again.

We've learned a few things in that time — like the fact that almost everyone underestimates how many boxes they need, that books belong in medium cartons and never large ones, and that the single most useful thing we sell is a $12 tape dispenser.
